Hello Welcome to robrexart.com
I find people see abstract art through their own lens. I suppose that is the purpose of art. My intention is to engage the viewer through colors and compositions that gets their mind thinking. To stir up feelings and leave it up to their imagination to decide what they are seeing.
From early childhood I was regularly exposed to art through my father who painted with oil mostly still life, as well as portraits. I got the smell of oil paint and turpentine into my blood. My grandfather, an old cowboy who spent the last few years of his life living with my family was an incredible wood carver. He would spend his days carving many western themed items. Entire wagon trains, horses, cows and steers, down to the smallest details.
I believe that early exposure to my father’s art and my grandfather’s carving primed me to be creative. I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t doing artistic work, painting, carving, etc.
In the eighties while attending Woodbury University for interior design, and working part-time as a carpenter, I lived at my father’s studio located in an old storefront building in downtown Los Angeles. It was there, through a neighbor who soon became a good friend, that I landed a construction job working for abstract artist Sam Francis. I worked on many of Sam’s studio and home construction projects in various southern and northern california locations for about ten years and was exposed to one of the great abstract artist work closeup.
I had always painted throughout my life, but it was during my time working the northern California construction projects and Sam’s ranch in Point Reyes Station, Marin County, that I seriously began to paint even more. It was the Marin County open spaces, quietness, clean air, and beauty yet harshness which pushed me to explore and expand my painting techniques. I had used watercolors and acrylics but I finally decided that oil works best for my visions of art.
I reside in Ventura, CA in an mostly agricultural area that is peaceful and a bit more quiet.
